Average age of American video game players rises to 37, new industry report finds

The typical American video game player is getting older, with the average age now sitting at 37 years old, according to a new report from the Entertainment Software Association. The data, released as part of the group's annual look at the industry, shows a steady upward trend in the age of players, up from 36 in the previous year and 35 just a few years ago.

That aging player base is also spending money. Overall consumer spending on video games in the United States reached $60.7 billion in 2025, a modest increase of 1.4% compared to 2024. The growth is slower than in past years, but the industry remains a major force in entertainment, outpacing both box office and music sales combined.

The report highlights that gaming is no longer a hobby for the young. Players over 45 now make up a significant chunk of the audience, often drawn to puzzle games, strategy titles, and social multiplayer experiences. Meanwhile, the share of players under 18 has dipped slightly, reflecting broader demographic shifts in who picks up a controller or plays on a phone.

Mobile gaming continues to dominate in terms of player numbers, but console and PC spending remain strong. The ESA notes that in-game purchases and subscription services are driving much of the revenue growth, while physical game sales continue their slow decline. The findings suggest that gaming has settled into a mature phase, with a loyal, older audience that treats it as a regular part of their leisure time rather than a passing trend.
