Matt Webster, CEO of Fuse Games, has a simple answer for why a niche racing title like Star Wars: Galactic Racer deserves to exist in a market dominated by shooters and open-world epics: the audience got bigger, so even the smallest slice of it is now a crowd.
"Ten years ago, a game like this would have been a risky bet for a mid-sized studio," Webster said in a recent interview. "Now, with the sheer volume of people playing games daily, you can aim for a very specific fantasy and still find millions of players. The long tail is not a tail anymore. It is a whole second body."
Webster is pushing back against the industry's habit of chasing mass appeal with safe, generic mechanics. Galactic Racer, which blends arcade speed with Star Wars lore, is his proof that players want something tighter, not necessarily bigger. He also took a direct swing at the cult of the "single creative visionary," calling it "bullshit" that holds teams back.
"The idea that one genius in a hoodie dictates the fun is outdated," he said. "Our best work came from a junior level designer who beat the veterans in internal playtests. We listened to her, and the game is better for it."
The shift, he argues, is generational. Younger developers grew up on speedrunning, modding, and competitive leaderboards. They do not worship the old auteur model. They care about feel, iteration, and respecting the player's time.
For Webster, the future is not about making games for everyone. It is about making a game that a specific someone will love so much they tell a friend. And with millions of new players entering the hobby each year, that specific someone is no longer a rare find.
