Hideo Kojima Says He “Fears” PlayStation’s Decision to Kill Physical Games on PS5

Legendary game director Hideo Kojima has voiced his concern over PlayStation's apparent shift toward a digital-only future for the PS5, saying he "fears" the consequences for game preservation and consumer rights. In a recent statement, Kojima warned that if physical game discs are eliminated entirely, players could lose the ability to truly own the titles they purchase.

Kojima's comments come amid reports that Sony is quietly phasing out physical game production for the PS5, pushing players toward digital downloads. The Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator argued that digital storefronts can shut down, servers can go offline, and licenses can be revoked, leaving players with nothing but a library of unplayable files. "When you buy a physical disc, you own that copy. When you buy a digital game, you only own a license that can be taken away," Kojima said.

He also pointed out that physical media allows for resale, lending, and long-term access, especially in regions with unreliable internet. While acknowledging the convenience of digital downloads, Kojima stressed that a complete shift to digital-only risks alienating collectors and archivists.
