The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has commenced the distribution of more than $72 million in refunds to consumers, following a settlement reached with Epic Games in December 2022. This significant payout is a result of the FTC's findings that Epic Games engaged in deceptive practices that harmed players, particularly children.
The settlement was prompted by complaints regarding the company's billing practices, which included charges for in-game purchases without proper consent. Many users reported being billed for unintended purchases, leading to financial strain, especially among younger gamers who may not fully understand the implications of in-game transactions.
As part of the settlement agreement, the FTC mandated that Epic Games implement measures to enhance transparency and protect consumers from similar issues in the future. The refund process aims to compensate affected users, ensuring they receive restitution for their experiences. The FTC's actions underscore its commitment to safeguarding consumer rights in the rapidly evolving gaming industry.
