Playstack first gained widespread attention with the release of Balatro in early 2024. The poker-themed roguelike became a surprise breakout hit, earning critical acclaim and selling millions of copies across multiple platforms. Its success turned Playstack from a relatively unknown publisher into a key player in the indie gaming space.
The buyer, which also owns the popular fan wiki platform Fandom and the gaming news site Gamespot, has been expanding its portfolio of digital media and gaming assets. The $151 million price tag reflects the value of Balatro's ongoing sales and the potential for future growth, including mobile and console expansions.
For now, Playstack will continue to operate under its current leadership, and the Balatro team is expected to remain intact. The deal is still subject to a shareholder vote, with a final decision expected in the coming weeks.
