Looking Back at 2002, From a Future That Never Came

Looking Back at 2002, From a Future That Never Came

It is strange to think that we now live further from the year 2002 than 2002 was from the moon landing. When we ran that theme week back in the day, we thought we were being clever. We were nostalgic for a time that was only a few years old, digging through the wreckage of the dot-com bust and the early, clumsy days of broadband. We posted about the GameCube's launch lineup, the weird charm of "The Sims" expansion packs, and the sheer audacity of "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City."

But here is the twist. We were writing about 2002 from a perspective that assumed the future would be linear. We thought by 2036 we would have flying cars and fully immersive VR. Instead, we got a decade of streaming wars and then a global retreat from the cloud. The internet we have now is slower, more fragmented, and ironically, more local. So when I reread those old posts, they are not just about the past. They are about a future that never arrived.

The funny part is that the games we praised back then are now the ones that feel most modern. The pixelated textures and the clunky controls are a comfort. They remind us that we did not need to be always online. We just needed a good story and a friend with a second controller. So here we are, in 2036, still talking about 2002, but now we are not looking back with nostalgia. We are looking back with a kind of envy for a time when the future still felt like a promise, not a threat.
