A Decent Rail Shooter That Only Sometimes Finds the Courage to Be Itself

A Decent Rail Shooter That Only Sometimes Finds the Courage to Be Itself

Wild Blue Skies wears its inspiration on its sleeve, and for fans of classic arcade dogfights, that is both a comfort and a curse. The game clearly wants to be a spiritual successor to Star Fox 64, with its tight corridors, looping barrel rolls, and wisecracking wingmen. And in many moments, it succeeds. The controls are responsive, the sense of speed is thrilling, and the boss fights have that old-school puzzle quality that rewards pattern recognition over raw reflexes.

But here is the problem: Wild Blue Skies does not always understand why Star Fox 64 worked so well. That game was not just about shooting down enemy fighters. It was about the rhythm of its levels, the way a quiet canyon would suddenly explode into a swarm of missiles, or how a simple escort mission could turn into a desperate scramble. Wild Blue Skies often gets the shooting right but misses the pacing. Levels drag in the middle, with long stretches of empty space that feel less like breathing room and more like filler. The story, too, tries to be quirky and self-aware, but the jokes land flat because the characters lack the charm that made the original crew memorable.

When the game commits to its own identity, it shines. There is a level set inside a collapsing space station that twists gravity and forces you to think in three dimensions, and it is genuinely inventive. But too often, Wild Blue Skies falls back on imitation, copying set pieces without the underlying design logic. The result is a decent rail shooter that never quite reaches greatness. It is worth a play for genre fans, but it will leave you wishing it had more courage to be its own thing.
