Hands-On With The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller

Hands-On With The 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller

Retro gaming has been surging in popularity for years, but the original hardware keeps climbing in price. For anyone who wants that authentic Nintendo 64 feel without paying a premium for worn-out joysticks and brittle plastic, the 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller offers a modern solution. Tom recently spent time with the controller to see if it lives up to the hype.

The first thing you notice is the build quality. It matches the original N64 controller's shape and button layout almost exactly, but the materials feel sturdier. The analog stick, a notorious weak point on the original, has been redesigned with a more durable mechanism. It still has that familiar octagonal gate for precise movement, but it does not wobble or lose calibration after a few sessions.

Wireless connectivity is seamless. Pairing it with a Switch, PC, or Android device takes seconds, and the Bluetooth range is solid. There is no noticeable input lag during gameplay, which is critical for fast platformers or fighting games. The controller also includes rumble support and a USB-C port for charging, so you do not have to hunt for AA batteries.

Of course, purists will notice a few differences. The Z button on the bottom feels slightly more clicky than the original, and the D-pad is a bit stiffer. These are minor trade-offs for a controller that works out of the box with modern systems. If you have been waiting for a reliable way to play classics like Mario Kart 64 or Ocarina of Time without digging out an old console, this is the best option available right now.
