The chance to play a video game against an Olympic medalist doesn’t come along every day. When the opportunity arose to face off against professional tennis star Taylor Fritz in Mario Tennis Fever, I jumped at it, armed with a controller and far too much confidence.
The setting was casual, but Fritz’s competitive spirit was immediately apparent. While we shared laughs and he was a gracious opponent, the skill gap was, predictably, oceanic. His real-world court sense translated seamlessly to the digital arena. His shot anticipation was uncanny, his positioning flawless, and his power serves with Bowser felt like facing his actual 140-mph ace.
I managed to win a few points, often when he attempted wildly aggressive shots from impossible angles just for fun. But any sustained rally inevitably ended with a perfectly placed passing shot or a drop volley that my Mii character could only watch.
The final score was decisively in his favor. The experience was a hilarious and humbling reminder that elite athleticism is a mindset that transcends the medium. Taylor Fritz didn’t just play the game; he mastered it within minutes, offering a brief, entertaining glimpse into the focus that earns hardware on the world stage. I may have lost convincingly, but getting schooled by a bronze medalist is a story worth telling.
