A Month of Waiting to Beat the Final Boss Left Me With Nothing But Regret

A Month of Waiting to Beat the Final Boss Left Me With Nothing But Regret

One bad decision begets another, and another, and another. That is the lesson I learned after spending an entire month deliberately avoiding the final boss of a game I genuinely love. I told myself it was strategy. I told myself I was savoring the experience. But deep down, I knew I was just afraid of the ending.

The game in question is one I had poured dozens of hours into. I knew every shortcut, every enemy pattern, every hidden corner of its world. When I finally reached the last door, I stopped. I convinced myself I needed to grind more levels, collect every optional item, and perfect my build. So I did that for a week. Then I told myself I needed to try different strategies against regular enemies to prepare. Another week passed. Then I decided to wait for a patch that might fix a minor bug I had not even encountered.

By the third week, the magic had started to fade. The world that once felt alive now felt like a checklist. The music that used to stir my emotions became background noise. I had over-prepared so thoroughly that the challenge I feared had already been dismantled by my own obsession with readiness.

When I finally walked through that door and beat the boss in under ten minutes, I felt nothing. No triumph. No relief. Just the hollow realization that I had traded the joy of a climactic moment for the comfort of control. I did not conquer the game. I starved it of its power. And now, sitting in the credits, I regret every extra hour I spent running in circles instead of just letting the story end.
