The Video Game History Foundation has released a statement addressing the growing shift away from physical game media, following Sony's recent confirmation that it will stop producing physical games for new titles by early 2027. The announcement has stirred debate across the industry, especially as rumors persist that Xbox's next console, codenamed Helix, may also go disc-free, and as Nintendo faces criticism for selling physical cartridges that only contain a digital download code.
The Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving gaming history, warned that this trend threatens the long-term survival of game archives. Without physical copies, games become dependent on servers and licensing agreements that can expire, leaving entire libraries inaccessible. The group noted that digital-only releases are harder to catalog, harder to repair, and often vanish when storefronts shut down.
While acknowledging the convenience of digital distribution, the Foundation urged developers and publishers to consider preservation from the start. They called for clear policies that allow for offline backups and legal archival copies, especially as the industry moves toward a future where physical media may no longer exist. The statement did not offer solutions, but it made one thing clear: the death of the disc is not just a retail shift. It is a cultural loss that will be felt for decades.
