Ubisoft has confirmed a significant restructuring at its long-standing subsidiary, Red Storm Entertainment, effectively ending the studio's original game development. The move results in the elimination of 105 positions at the North Carolina-based studio, known for its foundational work on the Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon franchises.
Founded in 1996 by author Tom Clancy and veterans of the simulation software industry, Red Storm was instrumental in defining the tactical shooter genre. Its legacy is deeply embedded in some of Ubisoft's most successful series. While the studio will no longer lead development projects, it is not closing entirely.
A core team will remain at Red Storm to provide ongoing technology and support services for existing titles. This shift reflects broader trends within Ubisoft and the gaming industry, where companies are streamlining operations and consolidating development resources amidst a challenging economic climate. The departure of so many veteran developers marks the end of an era for a studio whose influence on military-themed video games has been profound for nearly three decades.
