New regulatory filings reveal that Epic Games, the developer behind the blockbuster video game “Fortnite,” has laid off a significant number of employees across the Bay Area, including remote workers based in San Francisco. The job cuts, which affect dozens of positions, mark another chapter in the company’s ongoing cost-reduction efforts following a turbulent period for the gaming industry.
According to documents submitted under California’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, the layoffs impact employees in various roles, though the company has not publicly specified which departments were most affected. The filings confirm that the reductions include staff classified as remote workers who were previously tied to the company’s San Francisco operations. This move follows a broader wave of layoffs at Epic Games last year, when the Cary, North Carolina-based company eliminated approximately 830 jobs, or about 16% of its global workforce.
Industry analysts point to a cooling post-pandemic market, where surging demand for digital entertainment has normalized, forcing major studios to reassess their spending. Epic Games, which also operates the widely used Unreal Engine software, has faced additional financial pressures from ongoing legal battles with Apple and Google over app store fees. While the company continues to invest in its metaverse ambitions and the “Fortnite” ecosystem, these latest cuts suggest a continued focus on streamlining operations to maintain profitability. Affected employees were offered severance packages, but the news adds to a growing list of tech layoffs that have reshaped the Bay Area’s employment landscape over the past year.
