The cosmic horror title Call of the Elder Gods has arrived on the Nintendo Switch 2, bringing its Lovecraftian atmosphere to a new audience. While the game manages to capture a decent sense of dread and mystery, its storytelling and puzzle design fall short of what many players might expect from a modern horror experience.
The game drops you into a remote coastal town where ancient entities stir beneath the waves. The visual presentation on the Switch 2 is solid, with dark environments and grotesque creature designs that benefit from the system's improved hardware. The audio work also deserves mention, as the ambient sounds and occasional otherworldly whispers effectively build tension.
Where Call of the Elder Gods stumbles is in how it delivers its narrative. The plot relies heavily on scattered notes and optional dialogue that feel disconnected from the main action. Key story beats are easy to miss, and the payoff for those who dig deep into the lore is underwhelming. The puzzle design follows a similar pattern. Most challenges involve simple item fetching or pattern matching that never really challenges the player. There are a few clever moments, but they are too rare to carry the experience.
For fans of the genre, Call of the Elder Gods is a passable way to spend an evening. It looks and sounds the part, but it never fully commits to the complexity that its source material demands. The Switch 2 version runs smoothly, but a smooth ride through shallow waters is still a shallow ride.
