Brian Bucklew on Caves of Qud: Solving the Impossible, Switch Ports, and Endless Expansions

Brian Bucklew on Caves of Qud: Solving the Impossible, Switch Ports, and Endless Expansions

In a recent wide-ranging interview, Freehold Games' co-founder Brian Bucklew opened up about the decade-long development of Caves of Qud, the beloved science-fantasy roguelike that continues to evolve. When asked about his driving philosophy, Bucklew stated plainly: "I'm mostly interested in solving impossible problems." This mindset has shaped everything from the game's procedurally generated ecosystems to its recent, long-awaited Nintendo Switch port.

The Switch version, which launched after years of fan requests, required a complete overhaul of the game's control scheme. Bucklew detailed the painstaking work that went into controller support, noting that translating a deeply complex keyboard-and-mouse roguelike into a console-friendly experience was one of the studio's toughest challenges. "It wasn't just mapping buttons," he explained. "We had to rethink how players interact with the world."

Beyond the port, Bucklew touched on future expansions, hinting that the team is far from finished with Qud's strange, post-apocalyptic world. He also shared lighter moments from the interview, discussing his love for the Yakuza series and his daily ritual of brewing coffee—a fuel that powers long coding sessions. With no signs of slowing down, Bucklew and Freehold Games continue to push the boundaries of what a roguelike can be, one impossible problem at a time.
