5 Worst Dungeons & Dragons Video Games of All Time, Ranked

While titles like Baldur's Gate 3 showcase the brilliant potential of translating tabletop role-playing to the digital realm, the history of Dungeons & Dragons video games is littered with notable failures. These titles, often plagued by poor design, baffling mechanics, or a fundamental misunderstanding of the source material, have left fans wishing for a natural twenty to erase them from memory.

Topping many lists of the worst is the 2004 release Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard. This ambitious attempt to blend real-time strategy with role-playing elements resulted in a cluttered and unbalanced experience that satisfied neither genre's fans. Not far behind is the infamous Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor from 2001, remembered less for its adventure and more for game-breaking bugs and a notorious copy-protection virus that could damage players' computers.

The list often includes the painfully simplistic Heroes of the Lance (1988), a side-scroller that failed to capture any of the franchise's depth. Similarly, Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale (2011) was a shallow, repetitive hack-and-slash game criticized for its numerous technical issues. Rounding out these infamous entries is the 1993 console game Dungeons & Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun, which presented a confusing and poorly translated experience that bewildered players. These titles stand as stark reminders that a famous license is no guarantee of a quality game.
