A common problem with video games is that many of them are too long, even the short ones. The issue isn't the hour count, but when a game wears out its welcome. Titles can feel padded to justify development or price, losing their engaging spark.
Enter Pragmata, a new Capcom action game of ordinary plot and extraordinary gameplay. Lasting a focused 13 hours, it is a master class in what developers can do with each hour of a player’s time. The game follows a man named Hugh and an android girl, Diana, as they cooperate to defeat rogue robots on a lunar base.
The core gameplay is a brilliant tandem. Hugh runs and shoots, while Diana hacks. His shooting is largely useless until she intervenes. The player positions Hugh, triggers Diana to hack a robot—which creates a puzzle-like grid to solve—and then fires at the newly exposed weak points. This hacking-then-shooting loop begins as a simple, novel combination, producing a strong first hour.
But Pragmata excels by evolving this premise. What starts as a straightforward mechanic steadily deepens, introducing new layers and complexities without ever feeling repetitive or padded. The 13-hour runtime feels meticulously crafted, with each chapter building meaningfully on the last. It demonstrates that compelling pacing isn't about brevity or length, but about ensuring every moment has purpose.
